So-called gynecomastia, also known as “male breasts,” is a benign enlargement of the male mammary gland that cannot be treated through exercise or dietary changes and can result in a feminine breast shape. The self-esteem of affected men is often significantly impacted by this.
In addition to gynecomastia, men can also suffer from pseudogynecomastia, also known as lipomastia. In this case, the growth of the breast is not caused by an enlarged mammary gland, but by fatty tissue.

Process of gynecomastia treatment in Stuttgart
To ensure the desired result with harmonious proportions, the possible shape of the breast will be discussed with you in detail. For this purpose, Dr. Eppstein will advise you during a personal consultation at the clinic in Stuttgart. Once all questions regarding the operation for gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia have been clarified, a surgical appointment will be scheduled.
Gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia are usually operated on under local anesthesia. The surgery takes about 1 hour and is performed in the operating room of the EPPSTEIN Klinik in Stuttgart Mitte.
Depending on the case, the procedures and processes of the interventions differ slightly.
Both treatments aim to reduce the size of the chest and restore it to its natural proportion to the male physique.
In the case of gynecomastia, surgery is performed using a “subcutaneous mastectomy.” During this procedure, the excess glandular tissue of the breast is removed through a small incision at the edge of the nipple.
In the treatment of pseudogynecomastia (or lipomastia), the excess fatty tissue must be removed. This is performed by means of liposuction, during which the fatty tissue is suctioned out through a small incision at the lateral edge of the pectoral muscle.
Since both cases involve an outpatient procedure, you can return home directly after the operation. Usually, you will be fit for work again after just 2-4 days. You can start light exercise approximately 3 weeks after the operation.
After approximately 2 weeks, the sutures are removed following the subcutaneous mastectomy. For this appointment, you will visit us at our clinic in Stuttgart Mitte.
There are no sutures involved in liposuction. The final result of the procedures is visible once healing is complete, after approximately 3 months.

What is the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery?
A specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery has specialized in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery during his 6-year specialist training after medical school. What is the typical timeframe between the consultation and the surgery date?
As a rule, there are several weeks between the consultation and the surgery date. By law, a minimum period of 48 hours is required between the consultation and the performance of an elective procedure.
Under what circumstances can no intervention be performed?
Certain pre-existing conditions as well as the intake of anticoagulant medication can lead to a decision against performing a cosmetic surgery procedure. Such matters will be discussed in detail during the consultation.
How do I optimally prepare for surgery?
In a preliminary consultation with Dr. Eppstein, everything you need to know before the operation will be explained to you. Two weeks before the operation, you should not take any medications that affect blood clotting, such as ASS (Aspirin). Furthermore, you should stop consuming cigarettes. Everything else is detailed in our ‘Before and After’ sheet, which you will receive after your consultation.

Do I have to expect visible scars after gynecomastia surgery?
The suction of a male breast caused by a fat deposit (pseudogynecomastia/lipomastia) involves a barely visible incision of 3 mm in length in the lateral chest area. After a few months, the puncture is usually hardly visible. In the case of surgery for excess male mammary glands (gynecomastia), the incision is made at the edge of the areola and is also virtually invisible after a few months.
How long does the effect of gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia treatment normally last?
The effect of the gynecomastia/ pseudogynecomastia surgery is usually permanent.
Can I sleep on my stomach after breast surgery?
For the first two weeks after breast surgery, you should sleep on your back or side. After that, you can sleep on your stomach again depending on your comfort and the healing process.

How do I behave if complications occur?

How can I ensure a good healing process?
Physical rest and a healthy diet are important factors that contribute to rapid wound healing. The same applies to abstaining from cigarettes and alcohol. Dr. Eppstein will discuss further individual measures with you during the consultation.
Should I expect any pain after the procedure?
The pain is generally well-tolerated. Dr. Eppstein will issue a prescription for pain medication depending on the type of procedure.
How long do I have to wait until a final result of the treatment is visible?
A visible result is usually achieved after 3 months. The final result usually after 6 months. The scars have generally reached their final shape after about one year.
Can follow-up care also be performed at another doctor or hospital, as I have a long journey?
This may be possible under certain circumstances, but should be discussed individually with Dr. Eppstein.
Does the consumption of alcohol or cigarettes have a direct impact on the healing process?
Smoking can lead to a narrowing of the blood vessels, which worsens blood circulation and thus impairs healing. For a fast healing process, one should therefore refrain from the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes.
