Water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL) at the EPPSTEIN Klinik Stuttgart
In water-jet assisted liposuction, unwanted fatty tissue is gently flushed out of the tissue using a water jet and suctioned off with a special cannula. This method has proven particularly effective for lipedema patients.
The goal of water-jet assisted liposuction is to achieve a lasting improvement in body contour. To this end, the circumference of the affected regions is reduced and the symptoms are often significantly and long-term relieved.
What is lipedema?
Lipedema, an often painful fat distribution disorder, results in an increase of fat primarily in the legs. In addition, water retention and a tendency to bruise in these areas are often part of the clinical picture. Lipedema affects almost exclusively women; the patients often have a long history of suffering behind them.

Will I already incur costs during a consultation?
Yes, as a consultation is a medical service that must be billed according to the German scale of medical fees (GOÄ), there is a one-time fee of €75 for the individual and very detailed consultation.
What costs are associated with this treatment and is financing possible?

Is there a possibility of cost coverage by my health insurance?
The Eppstein Klinik is a purely private clinic. Therefore, cooperation with statutory health insurance companies is not possible. Our treatments are self-pay services.

Why does the EPPSTEIN-Klinik not show before-and-after pictures?
According to the Heilmittelwerbegesetz §11 (1), German physicians are not permitted to advertise surgical plastic-aesthetic procedures using comparative depictions of appearance before and after the procedure (before-and-after images).
I have a long journey – can my companion also stay overnight at the clinic?
Yes, the accompanying person can also stay overnight at the clinic.
Can multiple treatments be performed in one appointment?
In principle, multiple treatments can be performed during a single appointment. To what extent certain treatments can be combined must be discussed during a personal consultation.
What is the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery?
A specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery has specialized in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery during their 6-year specialist training following medical school. Since the term “cosmetic surgeon” is not protected, any doctor can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon without having completed specialist training. Therefore, we recommend that you entrust yourself to a specialist, such as Dr. Eppstein.
Is the EPPSTEIN Klinik a member of reputable professional associations?
Dr. med. Ron Julius Eppstein is a full member of the DGPRÄC (German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons), the ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), the VDÄPC (Association of German Aesthetic-Plastic Surgeons) and the GÄCD (Society for Aesthetic Surgery Germany e.V.).

Before the procedure
What is the typical timeframe between the consultation and the surgery date?
As a rule, there are several weeks between the consultation and the surgery appointment. By law, a minimum period of 48 hours is required between the consultation and the performance of an elective procedure.
Under what circumstances can no intervention be performed?
Certain underlying medical conditions as well as the intake of anticoagulant medication can lead to a decision against performing a cosmetic surgery procedure. Such matters are discussed in detail during the consultation.
How do I optimally prepare for surgery?
In a preliminary consultation with Dr. Eppstein, you will be told everything you need to know before the operation. Two weeks before the operation, you should not take any medications that affect blood clotting, such as ASS (Aspirin). You should also stop consuming cigarettes. Everything else is detailed in our ‘Before and After’ sheet, which you will receive after your consultation.
The procedure
On which parts of the body can liposuction be performed?
Fat can be suctioned from the thighs, lower legs, abdomen, hips, upper arms, neck, and chin.
Can several body regions be treated at the same time?
Yes, multiple body regions can be suctioned during a single procedure. If liposuction is performed on several body regions, the procedure may be carried out under general anesthesia.
How sustainable is liposuction and do suctioned fat cells grow back?
No, generally, the suctioned fat cells cannot grow back. However, remaining fat cells can be filled again, for example, through poor, unhealthy diet, little exercise, and lack of movement.
Do I need to wear compression garments afterwards?
After liposuction, you must wear compression garments for 6 weeks. These will be provided to you and are included in the surgery price.
When can I exercise again after liposuction?
Exercising after the procedure depends not only on the treated body region but also on the type of sport itself. After 2-3 weeks, you can resume light exercise without putting strain on the treated area. Additionally, light activities, such as walking, help prevent thrombosis. From the 4th week onwards, the treated body region can gradually be subjected to more strain.
Which are the best techniques for liposuction?
The two techniques used by Dr. Eppstein in a liposuction procedure are water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL) and the tumescent method. In WAL, fat cells are detached from the surrounding tissue using a very thin jet of water and then suctioned out. The fatty tissue is suctioned gently, which also often significantly reduces postoperative discomfort.
In the tumescence method, on the other hand, a larger amount of tumescence fluid is injected into the affected area, causing the fat to swell. This allows the fat to be suctioned off more easily. This technique is also gentle on the body, as the patient does not require general anesthesia.
Do I have to expect visible scars?
The scars from liposuction (approx. 3mm incisions) are minimal and hardly visible after some time.
What amount of fat can be removed with one treatment?
Under general anesthesia, depending on body size and weight, a maximum amount of 4-5 liters can be removed. With local anesthesia, a removal of approx. 2 liters is possible.

How do I behave if complications occur?
You will receive an emergency number where you can reach Dr. Eppstein at any time. In the event of a complication, please do not hesitate to call.
How can I ensure a good healing process?
Physical rest and a healthy diet are important factors that contribute to rapid wound healing. The same applies to abstaining from cigarettes and alcohol. Dr. Eppstein will discuss further individual measures with you during the consultation.
Should I expect any pain after the procedure?
The pain is generally well-tolerated. Dr. Eppstein will issue a prescription for painkillers depending on the type of procedure.
How long do I have to wait until a final result of the treatment is visible?
A visible result is usually achieved after 3 months. The final result is typically reached after 6 months. The scars have generally reached their final appearance after about one year.
Can follow-up care also be performed at another doctor or hospital, as I have a long journey?
This may be possible under certain circumstances, but should be discussed individually with Dr. Eppstein.
Does the consumption of alcohol or cigarettes have a direct impact on the healing process?
Smoking can lead to a narrowing of the blood vessels, which worsens blood circulation and thus impairs healing. For a fast healing process, one should therefore refrain from the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes.
