Process of breast reduction in Stuttgart
To ensure harmonic proportions and appealing aesthetics, the possible shape of the new breast will be discussed with you in detail. Dr. Eppstein will advise you on this during a personal consultation at the clinic in Stuttgart. Once all wishes and questions regarding the breast reduction have been clarified, an appointment for surgery will be scheduled.
A breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours. The surgery is carried out in the dedicated operating room of the EPPSTEIN Klinik in Stuttgart Mitte. During the procedure, excess glandular tissue and skin are removed, and your own tissue is reshaped into a smaller, firmer breast.
In most cases at the EPPSTEIN Klinik, we perform breast reduction using the scar-sparing “Lejour” technique.
The goal of this technique is to avoid a long scar in the inframammary fold. By preserving the patient’s own dermis, a so-called internal bra effect (dermal flap) can be created. This effect ensures a long-lasting result and thus a new quality of life.
After the surgery, you will remain in the clinic for one night as an inpatient. You can generally return to office work after about 1 week. You will have a follow-up appointment at the clinic for a check-up after 1 week, and the sutures can be removed after 2 weeks. You can usually resume physical labor and light sports after 3-4 weeks. You should wear a sports bra for 6 weeks after the operation.

Yes, as a consultation is a medical service that must be billed according to the Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ), a one-time fee of €75 will be charged for the individual and very detailed consultation.

I have a long journey – can my companion also stay overnight at the clinic?

Can several treatments be performed at one appointment?
In principle, multiple treatments can be performed during a single appointment. To what extent certain treatments can be combined must be discussed during a personal consultation.
What is the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery?
A specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery has specialized in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery during their 6-year specialist training following medical school. Since the term “cosmetic surgeon” is not protected, any doctor can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon without having completed specialist training. Before the procedure
What is the typical timeframe between the consultation and the surgery date?
As a rule, there are several weeks between the consultation and the surgery appointment. By law, a minimum period of 48 hours is required between the consultation and the performance of an elective procedure.
Under what circumstances can no intervention be performed?
Certain underlying medical conditions, as well as the use of anticoagulant medication, may lead to the decision to refrain from performing a cosmetic surgery procedure. Such details will be discussed in depth during the consultation.
How do I optimally prepare for surgery?
In a preliminary consultation with Dr. Eppstein, everything you need to know before the operation will be explained to you. Two weeks before the surgery, you should not take any medications that affect blood clotting, such as ASS (Aspirin). Additionally, you should stop consuming cigarettes. Everything else is detailed on our ‘Before-After’ sheet, which you will receive after your consultation.

Am I allowed to sleep on my stomach after breast reduction surgery?
Ideally, you should sleep on your back for the first 2 weeks after breast reduction. After this time, it is usually possible to sleep on your side without any problems. Sleeping on your stomach is generally possible a few months after breast reduction.
Is the ability to breastfeed impaired after breast surgery?
There is a 20-30% risk that the ability to breastfeed will be impaired after a breast reduction.
When can I start wearing underwired or push-up bras again?
You should not wear underwired bras or push-ups for 6 weeks after breast surgery, but instead a comfortable sports bra. About 6 weeks after breast augmentation, you can wear underwired bras or push-ups again.
Does the result of a breast surgery change after a pregnancy?
The breast changes with every pregnancy. To what extent pregnancy negatively affects the surgical result cannot be predicted exactly beforehand, however, as every course and every body is individual.
Do I have to expect visible scars?
We usually perform breast reductions using the scar-sparing ‘Lejour’ technique; the scars after breast reduction are generally very inconspicuous.
Can the breasts lose their sensitivity through the procedure?
As a rule, sensitivity recovers a few months after breast reduction. In rare cases, a sensory disturbance may remain.
Does a breast procedure affect a later mammography (cancer screening)?
In general, breast reduction does not interfere with a later mammography. However, the treating physicians should be made aware of the procedure so that they know how to correctly interpret the internal scars.
Does the nipple need to be moved during a breast reduction?
In the case of excessively large breasts, the nipples are often positioned too low. In this instance, we move the nipples upward into the optimal position. Since the nipples are not detached from their underlying tissue during this procedure, the risk of circulatory disorders and permanent sensory disturbances is low.

How can I ensure a good healing process?
Physical rest and a healthy diet are important factors that contribute to rapid wound healing. The same applies to abstaining from cigarettes and alcohol. Dr. Eppstein will discuss further individual measures with you during the consultation.
Should I expect any pain after the procedure?
The pain is generally well tolerated. Dr. Eppstein will issue a prescription for pain medication depending on the type of procedure.
How long do I have to wait until a final result of the treatment is visible?
A visible result is usually achieved after 3 months. The final result is typically reached after 6 months. The scars generally reach their final appearance after approximately one year.
Can follow-up treatments also be carried out at another doctor or hospital, as I have a long journey?
This may be possible under certain circumstances, but should be discussed individually with Dr. Eppstein.
Does the consumption of alcohol or cigarettes have a direct impact on the healing process?
Smoking can lead to a narrowing of the blood vessels, which worsens blood circulation and thus impairs healing. For a fast healing process, one should therefore refrain from the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes.
